Whether you know her from her acting career, such as her role as Pepper Potts in Marvel Cinematic Universe, or in particular you follow her wellness company, Goop, most people have heard of Gwyneth Paltrow.
She has attracted a ton of attention over the years, for reasons as diverse as winning an Academy Award and making product claims so erroneous that NASA called her out. But you may not know how much she loves Spain – or why she loves the country so much.
A trip to Spain changed the life of Gwyneth Paltrow
When Paltrow was only 15, she went on a trip to Spain. according to Today, that trip changed the course of her life. While there, she fell in love with the country and its culture.
“It’s so different from the United States. They seemed to have a history, and the buildings are years and years and years old, ”she explained. “Also, the way people live over there. They seem to enjoy life a little more. They don’t run around as much as in New York. They are having a great time with the family. ”
She may have been a teenager at the time, but she recognized the place where she lived, a small town outside Talavera de la Reina, as a special place, and Spain became her second home.
To this day, Paltrow remains close to the family who hosted her during that trip long ago. She describes them as her Spanish mother and her Spanish brothers.
Paltrow could not leave Spain
When Paltrow returned home, she continued to be captured by Spain. She studied Spanish, and became fluent. Years later, when she became a mother, she spoke Spanish with her children, Apple and Moses, until they grew up with a grasp of the language. She takes her family to visit Spain once a year.
Early in the founding of her iconic health empire Goop, Paltrow established a Spanish version of the website. But according to The Keeper, that is not even close to the biggest connection between Goop and Spain.
Paltrow posts a Christmas gift catalog on the Goop website, called the Ridiculous But Awesome Gift Guide. In 2018, the guide offered an abandoned village in Spain for a bargain price of $ 172,910.
In fact, food is one of the major factors in Paltrow’s enduring love affair in Spain, and it has taken her along the way.
Taking a Spanish road trip for the food
Food & wine reporting, in 2014, celebrity chef Mario Batali reported to Paltrow that he was about to start making a film with his co-host Mark Bittman. They planned to travel through Spain, in search of the best food and wine. The thing is that Batali did not expect Paltrow to have to come there.
Because she knows the country and is fluent in Spanish, Paltrow was a natural choice for entering the project. The three food lovers traveled all over Spain, eating and drinking to their heart’s content, and filming a 13-part series about the experience for PBS.
As a result of the exhibition Paltrow wrote her first book. She and Batali put it together Spain: Cooking road trip based on their journey.
Paltrow, 15, could not have imagined all the ways her trip to Spain would change her life as she grew older. The experience has expanded far beyond one happy memory; he has brought happy times and delicious food with him in many other ways as the years have passed.
