In crime drama, the focus is usually on the offender. The statement follows their causes and misfortunes. Little attention is paid to the people who embrace the most important effects of this nefarious behavior. In fact, women who leave behind bad men get very little screen time. We saw this on display at Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather saga when Michael Corleone ‘s wife, Kay, wanted to get out of her volatile marriage. It was then recently illustrated in Martin Scorsese ‘s book The Irishman how Frank Sheeran ‘s daughter gradually learns his true nature. However, in Julia Hart I am your woman, the filmmaker puts women back face and middle, reminding them of their power.

Set in the 1970s, I am your woman following Jean (Rachel Brosnahan), a suburban housewife and mother supported by her criminal husband, Eddie (Bill Heck). Although Jean is well aware that Eddie is a thief, she is largely sheltered from his daily activities, and does not ask questions, unwilling to disturb her miserable life. That moves one afternoon when she and her baby son are awakened to one of Eddie’s co-workers knocking on her front door.

‘I’m Your Woman’ follows an fleeing woman

Eddie, Jean is learning, is in the wind. She has to trust her husband Cal ‘s old friend (Arinzé Kene), and a duffle bag full of money will keep her and her son safe. Tense, influential, and at a good pace, the film follows Jean in her first several weeks hiding in an unnamed home in some unnamed east coast town. Cal has got to safety with caution – not talking or connecting with anyone.

However, restless from caring for a new, frightened, and alone child, Jean befriends an old neighbor (Marceline Hugot), taking a real danger right to her doorstep. What she did was also hurt Cal, his wife Teri (Marsha Stephanie Blake), their young son Paul (Da’Mauri Parks).

Jean is involved in some of the helplessness she feels

While the audience often pushes Jean’s choices, especially since she goes against Cal’s direct advice, Brosnahan paints a convincing picture of a woman who is unaware of her own power. However, instead of being coddled, Jean has to go against her own mistakes. Her marriage to Eddie has made her helpless; she doesn’t drive, she didn’t even have a gun, and when Cal tries to leave her and the baby, she shouts, “I’ve never been alone.” It’s her naivety that lights up the game for many of the obstacles she, Cal, and Terri face. This is especially troubling because Jean, and her baby are often alone with Cal, a big, broad Black man.

Although race is only occasionally mentioned throughout the film, Hart debunks not only Eddie’s choices but Jean’s complex behavior that harms others and leaves him incapable of claiming or stand up for itself. As the breadth of the film slowly unfolds, Jean is literally taken out of this behavior by force. Terri, on the other hand, as a Black woman, never received the gift of being protected from the realities of the world. “I don’t know what’s coming now, but I’ve been through this before,” she said at one point.

‘I am your woman’ is about standing in your power

I am your woman there are more trips and attempts in a two-hour run than anyone ever expected. The statement is only slightly down at the hour mark. It also showcases the style of the pool elegantly against the grit of criminal life. Suddenly and gloomily, there is an obvious lineage in the film that keeps the audience on their toes while we wait for the next shoe to fall.

I am your woman it’s about female friendship and finding the destiny for you even when you’re not quite sure what it is. As we watch Jean discover who she really is, recounting the lies in search of the truth, she becomes increasingly powerful, not just for a baby boy. and her new friends, but also her own.

I am your woman was screened for AFI Film Festival. The film will open in select theaters on December 4 before launching worldwide on Prime Video on December 11.
