‘The Andy Griffith Show’: Andy’s 1st Love Interest on the Show Demanded to Be Written Off


On the classic comedy series Andy Griffith Exhibition, Andy Taylor had several love interests. As the town sheriff and bachelor, this was to be expected.

But the main man’s first love interest on the show didn’t feel the love and he wanted out.

Andy Taylor never married on ‘The Andy Griffith Show’

Andy Griffith’s character on the show, Andy Taylor, remained a hindrance throughout the series. (However, he married his longtime girlfriend Helen Crump in the first episode of Andy Griffith Exhibitionfollow-up series, Mayberry RFD)

In Andy Griffith Showbook with Richard Kelly, “Howard Sprague” actor Jack Dodson explained why the show’s writers were obsessed with all the single and available characters.

“Having a married character is a big barrier for the writer because it gives the writer the freedom to create situations,” the book said Dodson said. “A character has to move from one environment to another, and it would not always be believable to be married.”

Elinor Donahue, who began her career as a child, explained in an interview in 2006 with the American Television Archive how it came to be thrown in 1960 onwards Andy Griffith Exhibition.

“I was called into the office to meet the delegates, went home that afternoon and found out I had the part. And I didn’t read or anything. I didn’t know much about that except that I was going to be in the show with Andy Griffith, ”said Donahue.

Donahue joined the team in their first season playing Ellie Walker, the town’s new chemist, or “lady druggist” as the comedy is referred to. Ellie arrives in Mayberry after taking over the drug store from her uncle and then making a romantic connection with the city sheriff, Andy Taylor.

Donahue sought her release from her contract

Continuing her conversation with the American Television Archive, Donahue revealed that “it didn’t really work. ”

“I did 11 programs, right there for the first season. I had a three-year contract. When we had rested for the hiatus, I asked to let her out of the contract. ”

Donahue was born in Washington state in 1937 and was a young actress who just felt she was not doing “my best job” in the job.

“I was going through some personal difficulties at the time and I needed some time,” she said. “I had just gone from Best known father to a month or two of unsettled personal life turmoil. It was a constant vibration. And then he went inside [The Andy Griffith Show]. I was exhausted. ”

Despite leaving the show, Donahue did not have bad feelings towards the producers or the team. However, she said she was “hurt” that they did not ask her to stay.

When asked if she would have stayed if they had asked, Donahue said, “Maybe. I desperately needed in that time someone to ask me, to do a lot for me. It was a difficult time. ”
