Chip and Joanna Gaines are two of the most popular HGTV guests in network history. The renovation duo became famous for transforming old broken homes into modern farmhouse stunners. Over time, Upper Fixer became the largest show on the network, and the Gaineses became millionaires many times.
Fans came to HGTV to pick up all the content they found about Chip and Joanna. But it surprised them to find out that these guests are not watching their own series. That’s because the Gaineses didn’t have a television when they fired on the Upper Fixer pilot.
And the wildest part of all? They don’t have TV yet to this day.
Chip and Joanna Gaines want their children to play outside
Instead of letting their children watch cartoons or spend hours on records, the Gaineses prefer to let them enjoy the beauty of nature on the family’s 40-acre Waco farm. The five Gaines children will never watch TV. But they have trees to climb, a pool to swim in, animals to care for, and gardens to tread. Even if they had a television, they might not have time to watch it.
And Joanna doesn’t plan to give her children cell phones either. In an interview with ET Online, she said, “I’m telling the kids that you’re probably not going to get a cell phone. We want to teach our children that life happens outside of these devices. It’s just a simple thing to go out and connect with nature, play with your friends, and get dirty. ”
It fits with their whole philosophy of simple screenless parenting.
The Gaineses are launching a network – but they don’t have a TV
Even after being mega-famous thanks to him Upper Fixer, the Gaineses never changed their strict TV policy. “We don’t have a television yet,” said Joanna Fast company at an event in October 2020. And they’re using their secrecy to the power of their stars as they throw talent on the Magnolia Network, too.
“The secret to good television is finding people who don’t want to be on television,” Chip said at the same event.
“We didn’t go out and make calls, something like that. We were just looking around, ”Joanna agreed. “What they do in real life is what drew us to their story. Without the cameras on them, you could see the passion, you could see the driver, the danger. And then when you look, you’re like, ‘Now I want to go do that. ‘”
Chip and Joanna Gaines try to bring families together
The Magnolia Network is for fans of all ages so Chip and Joanna hope to inspire families to connect with each other over watching TV. Even if the Gaineses are not yet watching television at home.
“You can see how everyone watches television now – everyone is in their own room, on their own device,” said Joanna. “Bringing more families together is not something. We were thrilled with the idea of taking people back around that television, and being with family, and leaving and being inspired. ”
Magnolia Network plans to launch in 2021.
