Andrew Rannells and Tuc Watkins appeared together at Broadway’s The boys in the band before appearing opposite each other in a Netflix remake featuring the same team. In the film, they play a couple on the verge of separation – as their differing views on monogamy, emotional and physical fidelity, and more hold the two against each other. However, Tuc Watkins and Andrew Rannells previously shared sex scenes in the dark comedy Black Monday. Tuc Watkins was a guest as Blair Pfaff’s (Rannells) lover in the show.
During an interview with Seth Meyers, Rannells talked about how close-ups with his other constellations differed from those he had to make with other constellations (which may or may not have been significant aliens beforehand). He explained why sex scenes with his true girlfriend, Tuc Watkins, inspired a new kind of anxiety.
Filming close-up scenes by Tuc Watkins created a new kind of on-screen concern for Andrew Rannells, as he got a little too deep in the thoughts – and the thoughts of those around him. However, he noted that it was still easier than presenting such scenes with complete strangers, perhaps because the comfort – and the romantic movement – is already present.
